Unioto Middle School gets history lesson

The Joseph Ogle Ohio Militia performed the trooping of the colors as the Unioto choir sang the national anthem.

CHILLICOTHE―”We the people of the United States,” rang out of the speakers at Unioto Middle School recently as students took part in an assembly celebrating Constitution Week.

The assembly featured the Joseph Ogle Ohio Militia presenting the colors and a Ben Franklin reenactor who told what it was like to write the constitution.

Constitution Day, which was celebrated on Sept.17, is the anniversary of the 1787 signing of the U.S. constitution. The assembly was part of Constitution Week hosted by the Chillicothe chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. This is one of the first celebrations for Constitution Week hosted by the DAR of Ross County and the first of its kind at Unioto schools.

The DAR worked with eighth-grade U.S. history teacher Anita Thackston to put on the assembly, during which DAR member Terressa Reep read out a proclamation from Governor Mike DeWine proclaiming the recognition of Constitution Week. Reep also had similar proclamations from Chillicothe Mayor Luke Feeney and the Ross County Commissioners.
